Last month the navy of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard conducted a military exercise around the coastline of Abu Musa, one of three disputed islands strategically situated in the Straits of Hormuz. Iran unilaterally took possession of these islands some fifty years ago, however, the United Arab Emirates has made the same claim.
In order to reassure the Emirates and other Gulf States of American support against Iranian aggression, CENTCOM Commander General Eric Kurilla and NAVCENT Commander Vice Admiral Brad Cooper transited the Straits of Hormuz on board a guided-missile Destroyer, inspecting the potential naval front and visiting friendly capitals along the Gulf.
